About Tsu Higashi High School and Us
Tsu Higashi High School is in Tsu City, Mie, Japan.
Tsu City is a capital city of Mie Prefecture, which is located in the center of Japan, between Tokyo and Kyoto. Mie is very rich in nature and history. There are lot of hitorical places and beautiful spots here, such as Ise Shrine, one of the greatest shinto shrines in Japan.

Our school has about 1200 students; 400 students in three grades.

The students who are trying these projects are in the English Oral Communication B classes for the third graders. The English subject is meant to improve the students' listening abilities through English.  We try to brush up our speaking and writing abilities in our lessons as well to send any kinds of messages to people all over the world.

About Our Project
We've been interested in using English as a tool outside our classrooms. We've been looking for good opportunities to communicate with people throughout the world. We happened to know about wonderful and useful projects provided by iEARN.

iEARN stands for the International Education and Resource Network. It is a NPO(non-profit organization) which encourages young people and teachers all over the world to communicate with each other with the help of global telecommunications networks. Almost 4,000 schools in over 90 countries are engaged in some kinds of projects or forums that connect students in various cultural backgrounds.

In the middle of June, we got a contact with people working for the organization and sent some messages about our participation in the projects to the coordinators. And we got some warm and encouraging emails from the students and teachers who got interested in our trial. We started to talk about what kind of projects we take part in and choose three projects out of so many in the project list. The students began working for the projects in groups; each group has two or three or more members. We spent 4 lessons for writing messages and drawing some illustarations.

Three Projects
Our Baby Project
The Students describe how we celebrate the birth of a baby through the use of photographs and words. They write about how a baby is named and what kind of food a baby is fed at its special ceremonies celebrating its birth.

Folk Tales Project

Some groups try to write about the stories which were told to them in their childhood. Some are scary and some are funny. The students who tried this project found how difficult it was to express the story in English. They worked well.

Free Time Games Project
A lot of students in the class are storongly interested in this project.
The students show what kind of games Japanese kids play with their friends when they have nothing to do on a bus or train, withoug using any tools or karaoke machine!

Comments on the works
We tried and worked hard doing the projects. Although it was so hard to writing messages in English, we enjoyed our work, thinking of how wonderful it would be to get some comments about our work from people from abroad.
We're are looking forward to it!
